1. Divisiveness

As for a person who stirs up division, after warning him once and then twice, have nothing more to do with him, knowing that such a person is warped and sinful; he is self-condemned.  Titus 3:10-11  It's honest confession time. The passage above has bothered me on occasion. I get how stirring up division in the church is a bad thing, but this verse has sometimes seemed overly strict to me.   I mean, "have nothing to do with him" seems harsh.  Calling him "warped" seems stern and severe.

    Your Calling
I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.  Ephesians 4:1-3 Have you ever heard a person talk about their job as their calling? When we hear someone say this, it's usually because the person has a strong passion to do something particular.  The person may also tie that

    Dwelling in Unity
Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity! Psalm 133:1 Last night I participated in a Thanksgiving service with some of my Christian brothers and sisters from our community.  The churches participating were from three different denominations.  I looked around the room and I saw people who were differing ages, differing shades of skin color, differing political affiliations, differing practices and views.   But despite those differences, we all have, at the very least,

    Enduring Community
May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus, that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.  Romans 15:5-6 I remember reading the passage above to a church group one day, and I was a bit surprised when someone jokingly pointed out how living in harmony with one another must take endurance.  After all, the passages says it is "the God of endurance" who grants living in
  5. A Diverse But Unified Church

    A Diverse But Unified Church
For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.  There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. Galatians 3:27-28 Not too long ago someone asked me what I wanted the church to look like in 10 years.  Now before I go on to tell you what happened next in this story, I want to point out that in this conversation "the church" is not a building.  The church is the people.  I realize that

    The Importance of Unity
"I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me."  John 17:20-21 Did you know that while Jesus was here on earth he prayed for you? Yep. That's right.  If you're a follower of Christ, he prayed for you around 2,000 years ago. John 17 proves it.  Look at the verses above that come in the midst of
