1. Unless the Lord Builds the House

Unless the Lord Builds the House
Unless the LORD builds the house, those who build it labor in vain. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchman stays awake in vain.  Psalm 127:1   I'm convinced one of the major problems in the church today is sinful self-sufficiency. The attitudes of "I've got this!" and "I can do this on my own" are prevalent. An inflated sense of our own intelligence, wisdom, strength, and ingenuity runs ubiquitous through almost everything we do.  Relying on someone else seems weak and pitiful.
  2. Trusting in the Lord or in Ourselves?

Trusting in the Lord or in Ourselves?
Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.   Proverbs 3:5  "Believe in yourself." "Follow your heart." "You've had what you needed inside you all along." These are phrases we hear a good bit these days.   They sound positive and uplifting. But are they good, sound advice? I would say a big, fat "NO!" to that question.  Not because I'm trying to be contrary, but because I believe in the Scriptures more than I believe in myself. And the Scriptures
  3. Eagles, God's Sovereignty, and Trust

    Eagles, God's Sovereignty, and Trust
Is it at your command that the eagle mounts up and makes his nest on high?  On the rock he dwells and makes his home, on the rocky crag and stronghold.  From there he spies out the prey; his eyes behold it from far away.  His young ones suck up blood, and where the slain are, there is he. Job 39:27-30 I'm not a fan of the Philadelphia Eagles, per se, but I was glad to see them win their first Super Bowl last night. I also have to admit, I was happy to see the Patriots lose.  Five Super Bowl
  4. The Lord Tests the Righteous

    The Lord Tests the Righteous
The LORD tests the righteous, but his soul hates the wicked and the one who loves violence. Psalm 11:5 I'm gonna say it . . . I'm not a fan of tests. When I was in school, tests gave me stress.  I was that guy frantically pouring over notes, study guides, note cards, etc., right before a test.  I was afraid of failing.  Failing was not something I wanted to face. When it comes to the tests the Lord sends our way, there is no way to cram.  The tests are meant to bring out of us what is really
  5. The Fear of Man

    The Fear of Man
The fear of man lays a snare, but whoever trusts in the LORD is safe. Proverbs 29:25 The fear of man is basically a preoccupation with what others think of us. It's those moments when we care far too much what other people think of us. We crave their approval. We fear their rejection. And this sets us up to be caught in a snare. It's a trap that keeps us from living in the freedom we have in the gospel of Christ. It keeps us from truly loving other people because we're so busy "performing" to
