1. Everyone Who Calls on the Name of the Lord Will Be Saved

Everyone Who Calls on the Name of the Lord Will Be Saved
For "everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved." Romans 10:13   This morning, while I was in the car going to a meeting with some pastors, I heard the 1995 song "Bullet with Butterfly Wings" by Smashing Pumpkins.   One of the repeated lines from that song struck me.   Several times, the lead singer says, "And I still believe that I cannot be saved." The song may not really be about Biblical salvation.  After all, some people interpret the song as a swipe at the music
  2. Thinking about Besetting Sin

    Thinking about Besetting Sin
For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out.  For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing.  Romans 7:18-19  Last night our Life Group had a good discussion about besetting sins. Because of that discussion, I'd like to take the time over the next few days to share some of the things we mentioned last night and hopefully expand and expound upon that
  3. Watch Out

    Watch Out
I appeal to you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause divisions and create obstacles contrary to the doctrine that you have been taught; avoid them.  For such persons do not serve our Lord Christ, but their own appetites, and by smooth talk and flattery they deceive the hearts of the naive.  Romans 16:17-18 As followers of Christ, we are called to love others the way we have been loved by our God. I hope every single one of us understands that truth. If not, we need to go back to the
  4. Abhor Evil, Cling to Good

    Abhor Evil, Cling to Good
Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good.  Romans 12:9  There are not many things I would say I abhor. Abhor is such a strong word. I may dislike something.   Maybe even hate a thing or two. But abhor? To me, that sounds like hate raised to the 10th power or something. In my mind, to abhor something isn't just to hate it.  It is to despise it with absolute loathing.  It is react with disgust and revulsion because the abhorred thing is seen as a detestable and

    Lord and Savior
But what does it say? "The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart" (that is, the word of faith that we proclaim); because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.  For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.  For the Scripture says, "Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame."  For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for
  6. Satan Crushed Under Your Feet

    Satan Crushed Under Your Feet
The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.  Romans 16:20  I gave this benediction at the end of our worship service yesterday.   It's a striking verse! Startling, even! First, think about how God is described in this verse.  He's the God of peace.  And yet what he has in store for Satan is not peaceful!  No, the peace he brings is to us as his people.  Satan is never promised peace.  Since Satan is the disturber of peace, God will
