1. The Great Reversal

    The Great Reversal
He has shown strength with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts; he has brought down the mighty from their thrones and exalted those of humble estate; he has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent empty away. Luke 1:51-53  There is a poem by Percy Bysshe Shelly that almost always gives me pause and brings me to the point of pensive reflection. The poem is Ozymandias. If you haven't hear of this poem before, it describes a broken statue of
  2. Do We Want Humility?

    Do We Want Humility?
Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.  James 4:10   William Law once wrote the following about humility . . . Although it is thus the soul and essence of all religious duties, yet is it, generally speaking, the least understood, the least regarded, the least intended, the least desired and sought after, of all other virtues amongst all sorts of Christians. Ouch! Is humility really the least understood, least regarded, least intended, least desired and sought after of all
  3. Unless the Lord Builds the House

Unless the Lord Builds the House
Unless the LORD builds the house, those who build it labor in vain. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchman stays awake in vain.  Psalm 127:1   I'm convinced one of the major problems in the church today is sinful self-sufficiency. The attitudes of "I've got this!" and "I can do this on my own" are prevalent. An inflated sense of our own intelligence, wisdom, strength, and ingenuity runs ubiquitous through almost everything we do.  Relying on someone else seems weak and pitiful.
  4. The Gospel Vs. Conceit

    The Gospel Vs. Conceit
Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another. Galatians 5:26  I think it's safe to say that most of us feel put off when see a conceited person. You know what I'm talking about. That person who is self-centered, egotistic, boastful, full of themselves. Like the person Carly Simon sings about . . .  "You're so vain, you probably think this song is about you." When people are conceited, it turns us off to them fairly quickly. And yet . . . We need to face the
  5. God Brings Down the Proud

    God Brings Down the Proud
The pride of your heart has deceived you, you who live in the clefts of the rock, in your lofty dwelling, who say in your heart, "Who will bring me down to the ground?"  Though you soar aloft like the eagle, though your nest is set among the stars, from there I will bring you down, declares the LORD. Obadiah 3-4 Obadiah is the shortest book in the Old Testament.   It's also about judgment against the nation of Edom. And there are no explicit, specific messianic promises mentioned in the book
  6. Consider Others More Significant

    Consider Others More Significant
Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Philippians 2:3   My mind is blown every time I think about what the verse above is actually saying. Do nothing from selfish ambition. Do nothing from conceit.   Engage with others in humility. Count others more significant than yourselves. Whoa! Talk about going against the flow! Generally speaking, our society is all about ambition and following the desires of our heart (which
