    Blessed are the Merciful
Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy. Matthew 5:7 "I hope he gets what he deserves!"  We hear statements like this when someone does something unthinkable. Maybe WE say these words. And let's face it, many of the people who provoke this kind of statement deserve some form of justice. We shouldn't deny that acts of evil deserve some just action. There is a need for true justice in the world. But when I hear this statement, I can't help but think about what I deserve before

    Good News for Lingerers
As morning dawned, the angels urged Lot, saying, "Up! Take your wife and your two daughters who are here, lest you be swept away in the punishment of the city."  But he lingered. So the men seized him and his wife and his two daughters by the hand, the LORD being merciful to him, and they brought him out and set him outside the city.  Genesis 19:15-16 Imagine being visited by literal angels from heaven.  These angels tell you that if you don't leave the city now, you will be annihilated along

    What Greets Me Today
But this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope: The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.  Lamentations 3:21-23 This morning greeted me with the normal challenges of family life . . . getting out of bed (sometimes that's challenge enough!), helping the kids get ready for school, doing morning chores, etc. I was also greeted this morning with some challenges that aren't necessarily normal for my

    Owning Up
For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me.  Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you may be justified in your words and blameless in your judgment.  Psalm 51:3-4 If observation and experience teach anything, most of us have a hard time owning up to and taking responsibility for our errors, faults, and offenses. It's just so easy to blame someone else for what we've done ("I wouldn't have called you a stupid idiot if you hadn't done

    How Christ-like Are We?
Now the tax collectors and sinners were all drawing near to hear him. Luke 15:1 There are times when a passage of Scripture really causes me to do a double take. Luke 15:1 is one of those passages. Yes, I know it's an introductory sentence to some of Jesus' most beloved parables.  And you would think those parables would be where my attention would be be drawn rather than just an introductory phrase. But I can't shake the feeling that as important as those parables are (and they are vitally

Seeing and Observing What God Says
Grace, mercy, and peace will be with us, from God the Father and from Jesus Christ the Father's Son, in truth and love. 2 John 3 I'm a fan of Sherlock Holmes.  I have "The Complete Stories of Sherlock Holmes" by Arthur Conan Doyle on my bookshelf, and every so often I pull it off the shelf and read a story or two. One of my favorites is “A Scandal in Bohemia.”  In that story, Holmes asks Watson how many steps lead up from the hall to his room.  Watson has no idea.  Holmes knows that there are
