1. Right in Our Own Eyes?

    Right in Our Own Eyes?
Every way of a man is right in his own eyes, but the LORD weighs the heart.  Proverbs 21:2  Do you think you're right? You may think that's a silly question.  And to a certain extent, it is. Of course you think you're right in what you say, or what you think, or what you do!   We all do! But thinking we are right and being right can be two very distinct things. What I say, do, and think may be right in my own eyes, but is it right according to the God who defines what is right? This truth
  2. Look at What's Inside

    Look at What's Inside
Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within are full of dead people's bones and all uncleanness.  So you also outwardly appear righteous to others, but within you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.  Matthew 23:27 -28 In my sermon yesterday, I mentioned something that raised some eyebrows . . . and I want to take this opportunity to explain what I said a little further. I mentioned a comment of a pastor

What Does Your Mouth Say About Your Heart?
The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks. Luke 6:45  What is your mouth saying about what is in your heart? Jesus tells us that out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks. Or as Peggy McCreight would say, "What's down in the well comes up in the bucket." If we listen carefully to what our words are saying about ourselves, we can learn a lot.
  4. What is Hidden

    What is Hidden
Who can discern his errors? Declare me innocent from hidden faults.  Psalm 19:12 Yesterday I walked out into our backyard to check on our pool.  It looked good . . . considering what a pool amateur I am.  I remember thinking, "The pool looks pretty clean, but I should check the skimmer basket." What I found in that skimmer basket was a huge, disgusting surprise to me!   It was a dead squirrel. Crazy, huh? The pool looked good on the surface, but hidden in that skimmer basket was the corpse
  5. When Words are Many

    When Words are Many
When words are many, transgression is not lacking, but whoever restrains his lips is prudent. Proverbs 10:19  It would be easy to ignore Proverbs 10:19.  It's just one verse.  It’s tucked away in a plethora of proverbs found in the Old Testament.  And who wants to limit what they want to say?  But it is part of Scripture.  It's not a good idea to ignore it.  And the proverb actually has parallels in the New Testament.  Think about, for example, what Jesus says in Matthew 12:36 (I tell you, on
