1. All We Like Sheep

    All We Like Sheep
All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned-- every one-- to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all. Isaiah 53:6 Back in 2005, there were some shepherds eating breakfast outside the town of Gevas, Turkey. Just a regular day for them . . . until they saw one sheep jump off a nearby cliff to its death.   That sounds awful, doesn't it? But what happened next was really cray cray. Following the lead of the first sheep, nearly 1,500 sheep plunged off the cliff as
  2. Love Fulfills the Whole Law

    Love Fulfills the Whole Law
For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: "You shall love your neighbor as yourself."  Galatians 5:14 I have to admit, I'm fascinated by this verse.   Allow me to tell you why . . . Paul, under the inspiration of the Spirit, says something radical about how the law is fulfilled. The whole law is fulfilled in one simple command. "You shall love your neighbor as yourself." But wait . . . I thought the whole law was fulfilled by two commands!  "Love your neighbor" is one of them, yes.  But
  3. Mysterious

    Mysterious
As you do not know the way the spirit comes to the bones in the womb of a woman with child, so you do not know the work of God who makes everything. Ecclesiastes 11:5  I love a good mystery.  I enjoy trying to figure out what's really going on when everything is not as it seems. But I also admit that I enjoy a mystery the most when everything comes together in the end and I understand what happened. Mysteries that remain mysteries are much harder for me to accept. Imagine reading a mystery

William Cowper Points Us to the Cleansing Fountain of Christ
On that day there shall be a fountain opened for the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, to cleanse them from sin and uncleanness.  Zechariah 13:1  William Cowper suffered emotional problems.  Anxiety and depression, among other issues, plagued him during his adult life. During one of his bouts with depression, he wrote the hymn "There is a Fountain Filled With Blood".   Cowper understood the prophecy in Zechariah 13 about a fountain that cleansed God's people from their sins
  5. A Good Word for an Anxious, Weighed Down Heart

A Good Word for an Anxious, Weighed Down Heart
Anxiety in a man's heart weighs him down, but a good word makes him glad.  Proverbs 12:25  Has your heart ever been weighed down with anxiety? I know mine has. In fact, I'm dealing with that weighed down anxious feeling today. Maybe you are too. There are all kinds of things one can do to help soothe an anxious heart.   Take deep breaths. Exercise. Get enough rest. Limit caffeine. These things can help, for sure. But what if your heart is not just anxious, but weighed down by
  6. The Gospel of a Snake on a Pole

The Gospel of a Snake on a Pole
They traveled from Mount Hor along the route to the Red Sea, to go around Edom. But the people grew impatient on the way; they spoke against God and against Moses, and said, "Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the desert? There is no bread! There is no water! And we detest this miserable food!"  Then the LORD sent venomous snakes among them; they bit the people and many Israelites died.  The people came to Moses and said, "We sinned when we spoke against the LORD and against you.
