1. Rebuke and Discipline Without Anger

    Rebuke and Discipline Without Anger
O LORD, rebuke me not in your anger, nor discipline me in your wrath.  Psalm 6:1 Nobody I know wants to be rebuked in anger. Most of us don't want to be rebuked, period!   But with anger? No, thank you. Furthermore, I know of no child who wants to be disciplined by a furious parent. Discipline is hard enough to go through as it is.  When the parent administering the discipline is infuriated, it makes it that much harder to endure. In Psalm 6, David seems to know that rebuke and discipline
  2. From Groaning to Goodness

    From Groaning to Goodness
Give ear to my words, O LORD; consider my groaning.  Give attention to the sound of my cry, my King and my God, for to you do I pray. Psalm 5:1-2 I didn't sleep very well last night. And so this morning, I let out a few groans before I tumbled out of bed. We've all had those mornings.   Mornings of groaning. But sometimes our groaning is more than just a desire for more sleep. Sometimes our groans come from a place of deep pain. Physical pain.   Emotional pain. Mental pain. Spiritual
  3. Who Will Show Us Some Good?

Who Will Show Us Some Good?
There are many who say, "Who will show us some good? Lift up the light of your face upon us, O LORD!"  You have put more joy in my heart than they have when their grain and wine abound. Psalm 4:6-7 As you can tell by the image above, I asked Siri this morning about who might do us some good. Her answer was not all that helpful. In Psalm 4, the Psalmist says there are many who ask that question.  I have to admit, when I read that, something inside me aches. If people are asking "Who will
  4. Salvation Belongs to the Lord

    Salvation Belongs to the Lord
Salvation belongs to the LORD; your blessing be on your people! Selah  Psalm 3:8 I saw recently that the SC Lottery Power Ball jackpot is up to around $80,000,000. You know, I'd like to think if I had $80,000,000, the first thing I'd do (after paying off my mortgage and setting some aside for my kiddos) is to give as much money as I could to various charities. I'd really like to think that's what I'd do. But who knows what I would really do? We often don't know what we'd actually do in a
  5. Seeing the Invisible God

    Seeing the Invisible God
He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. Colossians 1:15   "He's the spitting image of his father." That is strange phrase to me.   The sense seems to be that the son is so similar to his dad, it's almost as if the father had spat him out of his mouth. Strange.  And a little gross, if you really think about it. As weird as that phrase is, it makes me think about Jesus. That's because Colossians 1:15 tells us Jesus is the image of the invisible God (I plan to
  6. Faith, Not Fear

    Faith, Not Fear
Then Moses summoned Joshua and said to him in the sight of all Israel, "Be strong and courageous, for you shall go with this people into the land that the LORD has sworn to their fathers to give them, and you shall put them in possession of it.  It is the LORD who goes before you. He will be with you; he will not leave you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed."  Deuteronomy 31:7-8  I saw an article online recently about 21 challenges facing the church in the 21st Century. It was an
