    Firstborn
He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.  Colossians 1:15   Yesterday, we looked at the first half of Colossians 1:15 that states Jesus is the image of the invisible God. Today, I'd like to talk about the second half of the verse . . . the part where Jesus is called "the firstborn of all creation." You should know that title has sparked a controversy or two. In the fourth century Arius and his followers argued passages like this one demonstrated the Son of God
  2. Seeing the Invisible God

    Seeing the Invisible God
He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. Colossians 1:15   "He's the spitting image of his father." That is strange phrase to me.   The sense seems to be that the son is so similar to his dad, it's almost as if the father had spat him out of his mouth. Strange.  And a little gross, if you really think about it. As weird as that phrase is, it makes me think about Jesus. That's because Colossians 1:15 tells us Jesus is the image of the invisible God (I plan to
  3. Jesus, Priceless Treasure

    Jesus, Priceless Treasure
For I want you to know how great a struggle I have for you and for those at Laodicea and for all who have not seen me face to face, that their hearts may be encouraged, being knit together in love, to reach all the riches of full assurance of understanding and the knowledge of God's mystery, which is Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.  Colossians 2:1-3 Sometimes a song says what I'm thinking better than I ever could.  That's true for today. Here's a hymn by

    Love is Central
And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.  Colossians 3:14  Just how important is love? I'm sure we would all say that love is important on some level.  But how important is it to love others? In John 13:35, Jesus said, "By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another."  Paul said in 1 Corinthians 13 . . . If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging
  5. Liar, Liar?

    Liar, Liar?
Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator.  Colossians 3:9-10 Lying is much more prevalent among us than we'd like to think. People lie to keep out of trouble ("No, officer. I had no idea I was going 60 in a 35.") People lie to save face ("I've never said I like to eat peanut butter and sardine sandwiches! Where did you hear that?") People lie
  6. Putting to Death Our Sins

    Putting to Death Our Sins
Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.  Colossians 3:5 On August 6, 1890, at Auburn Prison in New York, William Kemmler became the first person to be put to death in the electric chair.  Kemmler had been convicted of murdering Matilda Ziegler, his lover, with a hatchet.  On the day of his execution, Kemmler was strapped in to the electric chair and a charge of somewhere between 700 to 1000 volts
