1. Love is Vulnerable

    Love is Vulnerable
Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God.  1 John 4:7    I think it's safe to say that Christians know we are called to love one another.  The Bible is very clear on that. We also know that love is from God.   But what love entails is sometimes a bit fuzzy to us. 1 Corinthians 13 gives us some parameters . . .   Love is patient and kind.  It does not envy or boast.  It is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its
  2. That You May Know

    That You May Know
I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God that you may know that you have eternal life.  1 John 5:13  The older I get, the more uncertain I am of things I thought I knew earlier in life. Here are some examples . . . I thought I knew the best way to raise children . . .  before I had them!  Now I'm finding I was wrong about a lot!    There was a time when I was certain my political views were absolutely, without a doubt, correct in all aspects.  I'm definitely not
  3. Jesus and Life

    Jesus and Life
Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.  1 John 5:12  Someone recently mentioned the band Audio Adrenaline in a conversation, and that caused me to think of a song by that band named simply, Life. The song starts off with these lyrics . . . Life is a series of impossible dreams,  Full of disappointment, and it ain't what it seems An then later in the song there's the line . . .  Life! Too much to do and too much strife I have to admit, those
  4. Think You Know Love?

    Think You Know Love?
So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.  1 John 4:16 "I thought I knew what love was, what did I know?" That's a line from Don Henley's 1984 song, "The Boys of Summer". I've been thinking about that line a lot this week. We all think we know what love is, but what do we really know? Love seems like such a ubiquitous thing.  Surely we all know what love is! But in order to truly know
  5. Encouragement to Fess Up

    Encouragement to Fess Up
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.  1 John 1:9 Based on what I've seen in my own life and in the lives of others, admitting we've done something wrong is usually difficult for us.  There are all kinds of reasons why it may be hard to admit our iniquities. Maybe it's because we're blind to what we've done. Maybe it's because we don't want to admit it to ourselves that we've done such a thing. Maybe it's because
  6. Laying Down Our Lives For One Another

Laying Down Our Lives For One Another
By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers.  1 John 3:16 At the start of the movie Captain America: The First Avenger, Steve Rogers is a 90 pound asthmatic who wants to join the military.  Of course, he is rejected. Yet Dr. Erskine overhears a conversation Steve has with his best friend and is moved by his patriotism which can be summed up by his comment, "Men are laying down their lives.  I've got no right to do anything less
