    Joy and Peace
May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.  Romans 15:13 During the month of December we will hear lots of talk about “joy” and “peace.”  While this may be a nice change of pace from what is talked about the rest of the year, we often find that the joy and peace spoken of in December is divorced from the true source.  We somehow think we can manufacture peace and joy during the Christmas season by singing

    Praying for and Seeking Peace
And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.  James 3:18 Over the last few days I've been thinking about the "Peace Prayer" often attributed to Francis of Assisi.  There is so much about this prayer that encourages and challenges me in my faith.   And when I connect James 3:18 to this prayer, I am further encouraged and challenged. I long for righteousness.  In my own life and in the world around me.   I also long for peace. James says, "a harvest of

    It Is Well
For God alone my soul waits in silence; from him comes my salvation.  He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be greatly shaken. Psalm 62:1-2 Do you know about Horatio Spafford?  In 1873, Horatio planned a trip to Europe with his family.  As the date for the trip drew near Horatio’s business ran into some trouble.  Because of this trouble he realized he would not be able to go to Europe as he had planned.  He wanted the rest of his family to go, however, and so he sent

    Being True Peacemakers
If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.  Romans 12:18  What happened in Charlottesville over the weekend has a lot of people talking about hatred, racism, and violence.  The ideologies of white supremecy, neo-Naizism, and the KKK are being denounced as they should be.  We are grieving over the death of Heather Heyer.  We are troubled with how violent events like this seem to be increasing.  We are concerned about the lack of peace among us.     As we're thinking on

Seeing and Observing What God Says
Grace, mercy, and peace will be with us, from God the Father and from Jesus Christ the Father's Son, in truth and love. 2 John 3 I'm a fan of Sherlock Holmes.  I have "The Complete Stories of Sherlock Holmes" by Arthur Conan Doyle on my bookshelf, and every so often I pull it off the shelf and read a story or two. One of my favorites is “A Scandal in Bohemia.”  In that story, Holmes asks Watson how many steps lead up from the hall to his room.  Watson has no idea.  Holmes knows that there are

    Anxiety
Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.  And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7 I know what it's like to feel anxious. That uneasy feeling in the pit of the stomach. The raise in heart rate. The tension in my neck and shoulders. The mental distress and worry.   Yep, I'm all too familiar with it. And so
